What Does Professional Barista Training Include?

Updated 25 September 2026 · 5 min read · by CoffeeTraining.shop, Bahria Town Phase 5, Rawalpindi

Quick answer

Professional barista training covers six stages of making coffee — source and roast, grinding, dosing and tamping, espresso extraction, milk steaming, and pouring and serving — plus latte art, café workflow, cleaning and customer service. Good courses are mostly practical, with students working on commercial espresso machines rather than watching demonstrations.

The six stages you'll master

1. Source & roast

Where coffee comes from and how light, medium and dark roasts change flavour — so you understand why two bags behave differently on the same machine.

2. Grind

Fresh grinding, and matching grind size to the brew method: fine for espresso, coarser for filter. This is where consistency starts.

3. Dose & tamp

Measuring a consistent dose (typically 18–21 g for a double espresso), distributing it evenly and tamping level, so water flows through the puck evenly.

4. Extract

Pulling espresso at around 9 bar and about 93°C, usually in 25–30 seconds, then tasting and adjusting. You learn to recognise sour (under-extracted) and bitter (over-extracted) shots and fix them with the grinder.

5. Steam milk

Stretching and rolling cold milk into glossy microfoam at around 60–65°C — the texture that makes a smooth latte and makes latte art possible.

6. Pour & serve

Combining espresso and milk with control, pouring patterns such as the heart, rosetta and tulip, and serving at the right temperature.

Beyond the six stages

  • Café workflow — organising the bar and staying consistent when orders pile up.
  • Equipment care — daily cleaning of the espresso machine, steam wand and grinder.
  • Manual brewing — filter and pour-over methods and brew ratios.
  • Flavoured drinks — building signature drinks with premium syrups such as MONIN and 1883.
  • Customer service — taking orders, recommending drinks and handling a queue calmly.

How much of it is hands-on?

In a good course, most of your time is spent making drinks. Theory is explained at the machine, then practised immediately. At our Bahria Town Phase 5 academy, students work on commercial Italian espresso machines and precision grinders from the first session, with a trainer correcting technique in real time.

How long are the courses?

  • Professional Barista Mastery — 3–4 weeks, 10 AM–4 PM daily, covering all six stages.
  • Espresso Fundamentals — a 2-day weekend intensive focused on extraction and calibration.
  • Latte Art Advanced — 3 days of practical pouring for people who already know the basics.

Do you get a certificate?

Students who complete the course and pass the final practical test receive a Certificate of Completion with a unique certificate ID, listing the skills covered. What matters most to employers, though, is what you can show them behind the bar.

How to choose the right course

Complete beginners get the most from a full course. If you already work in a café, a focused class — espresso or latte art — fills specific gaps. Not sure?
