How to Become a Barista in Pakistan
Updated 25 September 2026 · 6 min read · by CoffeeTraining.shop, Bahria Town Phase 5, Rawalpindi
Quick answer
To become a barista in Pakistan, learn espresso extraction, milk texturing and latte art through hands-on practice on a commercial espresso machine, build speed and consistency, then apply to cafés, hotels or coffee chains with a CV that lists your practical skills. Beginners typically train for a few weeks — for example, a 3–4 week full-time course — before applying.
What does a barista actually do?
A barista prepares espresso-based drinks — espresso, cappuccino, latte, flat white — plus filter coffee and specialty drinks, and serves them to customers. On a normal shift that means dialling in the grinder each morning, pulling consistent shots, steaming milk, pouring, keeping the bar clean and moving quickly when the queue builds.
It's a practical, physical job. Knowing the theory helps, but cafés hire people who can show they can do it.
The skills cafés hire for
- Espresso extraction — dosing, tamping, and judging a shot by time, yield and taste.
- Grinder calibration — adjusting grind size when a shot runs too fast or too slow.
- Milk texturing — silky microfoam at around 60–65°C, not bubbly foam.
- Latte art — at least a clean heart; rosettas and tulips set you apart.
- Speed and workflow — keeping quality up when orders stack.
- Hygiene and cleaning — daily machine, grinder and bar care.
- Customer service — friendly, clear and calm under pressure.
Step-by-step: from beginner to barista
1. Learn the basics properly
Start with how espresso works: why grind size matters, what under- and over-extraction taste like, and how milk behaves when you steam it. Getting this right early saves months of bad habits.
2. Get hands-on time on a commercial machine
This is the step most people skip — and the one that matters most. Home machines behave differently from café equipment. Structured barista courses give you hours behind a commercial machine with someone correcting your technique as you go.
3. Practise until it's consistent
One great shot is luck. Ten in a row is skill. Repeat the same drinks until your extraction and milk texture are consistent without you thinking about it.
4. Learn latte art
Latte art is visible proof of good milk technique, and it's often part of a café trade test. Focus on a clean heart first, then build up to a rosetta and tulip. Our latte art training page explains what's involved.
5. Build a skills-based CV
List what you can actually do — "dial in espresso on a commercial grinder", "pour heart, rosetta and tulip" — and include any certificate of completion. Be ready for a practical test at interview.
6. Apply to cafés, hotels and chains
Specialty cafés, hotel F&B teams, restaurants and coffee chains all hire baristas. In the twin cities, many new cafés open around Bahria Town, DHA, Islamabad and Rawalpindi — worth visiting in person with your CV.
How long does it take?
With full-time, hands-on training, a complete beginner can reach café-ready basics in a few weeks. At our academy, the Professional Barista Mastery course runs 3–4 weeks (10 AM–4 PM daily). Shorter options exist — such as a 2-day weekend espresso intensive — but these build a foundation rather than full job-readiness.
What do baristas earn?
Pay varies a lot by employer, city and skill level. As a rough, indicative guide: around PKR 40,000–80,000 per month in Pakistan, around USD 800–1,500 per month in the Gulf, and around £1,500–2,200 per month in the UK. Specialty skills and experience tend to earn more. These are not guarantees — always check current job listings.
Can I work as a barista abroad?
Yes — many Pakistani baristas work in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and further afield. Employers abroad still expect practical skill, so arrive with real machine experience, a clear CV and the ability to pass a trade test.
